Air fuel ratio is the key to
successful engine. Call it another example of the Goldilocks principle:
not to reach, not to lean, just right. Getting the fuel mixture just
right for any road speed and RPM combination is the challenge. A lean mixture can cause
engine damage; a rich mixture wastes gasoline. Carbs provide a rich fuel
mixture to compensate for all driving conditions but sometimes a carb is
too rich and gas is wasted. Carbureted engines do not typically have
engine management systems. If you have a carbureted engine then your
best choice is an exhaust gas analyzer like Gastester or a wide band O2
sensor with the sensor either mounted in the exhaust down pipe or
alternatively placed in the end of the exhaust pipe using a special
adapter. Cars manufactured after 1996 are equipped with an onboard computer or OBD that manages engine timing and fuel delivery. It's possible to tap into the OBD and capture data on air fuel ration, RPM and other tuning data to build a picture of how well your engine is performing. In some cases the OBD software lets you change engine parameter but this is not for novices as engine damage is possible. Preview Tuning Books on Ebay. |

They also sell and install a jet kit and the Gastester helps them tune the low speed setting for optimum performance. Scott said that Gastester is a cost effective alternative to 4-5 gas analyzers. Thanks Scott.
