From Der Rundeschreiber
March 6 Tech SessionThe March Tech Session was held at Wil Rathke's house and covered brake system bleeding and flushing. While we didn't have a huge turnout those who attended had a good time and learned a few things. Some of the wives came along and did whatever it is that wives do while the men do things automotive.Originally we had planned to do the brake bleeding by the old fashioned , tried-and-true method that requires two people (one in the car to pump the brake and one under the car), but we found a better way. The Gunson "Eezibleed". Don Mullins brought one which he had purchased through an ad in the Roundel, and we used it on four different cars. This device provides pressure and brake fluid directly to the master cylinder, eliminating the need to have someone in the car pumping the brake pedal! Fill its bottle with brake fluid, pressurize it from your spare tire (or left front), and start to work. You do have to reduce the tire pressure to under 20 psi, though, so if you don't have a compressor you' should use the spare. There were some questions at this session about whether there were different procedures for bleeding the braes on cars equipped with ABS. We couldn't find anything specific in the data we had available, and what we were doing was working, so we pressed on. It should be noted that many later model BMWs are equipped with a brake servo which should have the pressure "bled off' prior to opening any of the bleeder screws. This can be done by pumping the brake pedal approximately 30 times with the ignition on and should be done no matter how you bleed your brake. If you use an Eezibleed, do this prior to pressurizing, the Eezibleed. |
